They may be young, but the Midwest Charity Begins at Home Youth Committee have already made a difference to the lives of many Mid West families.

Since 2015 the committee, aged nine to 18, have been responsible for raising muchneeded funds for Midwest Charity Begins at Home — supporting families doing it tough with serious illness.

Their work has caught the attention of the Youth Affairs Council of WA, and the committee have been announced as one of four finalists in the RUAH organisational achievement award (small) in this year’s WA Youth Awards.

The awards, established in 1999, recognise young West Australians aged 12-25 for their achievements and contributions to the community.

Youth committee member Molly Hallinan, 17, said the committee were humbled by the nomination.

“We all love being able to give back to our community and it’s nice to be able to help people we actually know and see every day,” she said.

The committee have run many fundraising events, including the Perth Wildcats Bingo Night, hospital visits with the Geraldton Buccaneers, and movie premieres.

They’re also known for their annual Giving Tree, which has provided Christmas presents to hundreds of Mid West families.

Committee member Chloe Chapman said the committee had grown in leaps and bounds, having worked in partnership with other local businesses and organisations.

“We have a broad range of ages on the committee, which is really great because it leaves us with a variety of different fundraising ideas to follow up,” she said.

“But the one thing we all have in common is we enjoy being a role model to other youth in our community.”

The awards night will be held on Thursday, October 12, in Perth.
